Most Worshipful Brother
Donald Frank MacKayOn June 6th, 1993 the 128th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Ancient and Free and Accepted Masons of Nova Scotia was held in Halifax,where Brother Donald Frank MacKay was elected as the 71st Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Nova Scotia.
Born in Boulardrie, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia he attended school there and at Sydney Mines High as well as the Agricultural College in Truro. Later he joined the Canadian Army (Active) Service and served in Canada, the U.K. and Continental Europe. After returning to civilian life he spent 18 years in the Militia as Quarter-Master Sgt.-Major and received The Canadian Decoration.
Brother MacKay was raised in St. Mark's Lodge No. 35 in Baddeck, N.S. on March 20,1947. Affiliated with the St. Andrew's Lodge No. 7 of Sydney, N.S. and became a life member. Affiliated with the Thistle Lodge No. 36 in Port Morien, Cape Breton. Honourary member of Heather Lodge No. 125 Framboise and this year was made honourary Past Grand Master of The Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan.
He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1991. Appointed Grand Steward of The Grand Lodge in Nova Scotia in 1988, Junior Grand Warden 1990, Senior Grand Warden 1991, Deputy Grand Master 1992, and Grand Master of Masons in Nova Scotia in 1993.
He was the Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan near the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia.
Brother MacKay was a 32nd degree member of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Rose Croix Life Member and past High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons. A Life Member and preceptor of the Cape Breton Preceptory. A Life Member and Past Thrice Illustrious Master of the Royal and Select Master, Grand Steward of the Supreme Grand Council Eastern Jurisdiction of Canada Royal and Select Masters.
Brother MacKay was an Ambassador and Life Member of Philae Temple Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. A member of the Cape Breton Shrine Club and The Arm of Gold Shrine Club in Baddeck. He was a Life Member of The Knights of The York Cross of Honour, and a Life Member of The Red Cross of Constantine. A life Member of the Holy Royal Arch Knights Templar Priests. A member of The York Rite College No. 132, Nova Scotia. A member of the Universal Craftsman Council of Engineers.
He was a member for 45 years of the Royal Canadian Legion was 2nd Vice-President and a member of the District Command. A member of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps Association, a Life Member of the Sydney Garrison W. O.'s and Sgt.'s Mess. A Life Member of the Clan MacKay Society of Nova Scotia.
Brother MacKay retired after 37 years of employment at Sydney Airport and several years with the Canadian National Railway.
Brother MacKay is survived by his wife Margie, one son John and four daughters Sheila, Kathy, Shauna and Marylou and two grandchildren, Kenzie Michelle Morrison and Will Fraser. Brother MacKay resided in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia and was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.
